The drawing “Maadtegen vuelie” (the song of the root) with its Maadth (sculpture) was made during a residency for GIBCA the summer of 2019. The upside-down Maadth/Root as an ancient image of Maadteraahka / Root mother - earth mother - earth. but also Sajve, the spirits of the other world, the soil, the formothers. The drawing Maadtegen vuelie the song of the root starts off as a root, where the edges touches the edges of the gåetie, (the traditional house which mirrors the cosmos-) which are called maadtere, root edge. In the center is the aernie, the fire place/sun, where (we give thanks to) Saraahka stays, the suns daughter, the fire of life. Learning the South Sami language is like learning the land, recognizing the world in the words. The house/world has been (and still is) treathened by forces. Another kind of language is leaking into the house/root which is also a gievrie - a spiritual drum which predicts the future. When language of violence is entering our bodies and worlds.This is the song.
